Redwood City police arrested a man Wednesday after a fatal hit-and-run collision Tuesday evening. Lazaro Gregorio Chacajlux, 32, of Redwood City, surrendered on Wednesday to police investigators, according to a police release. He was arrested and booked into the San Mateo County Maguire Correctio nal Facility on suspicion of felony hit-and-run resulting in death and gross vehicular manslaughter. On Tuesday evening, a Jeep with a 36-year-old passenger was traveling south on Hudson Street when it was allegedly sideswiped by Chacajlux in a white Ford pickup truck, police said. The truck was exiting a driveway behind the Shell gas station at the intersection of Hudson Street and Woodside Road. After the collision, police said the driver of the Jeep pulled over and stopped the vehicle to exchange information, while Chacajlux fled the scene in the truck without stopping. The 36-year-old Jeep passenger pursued Chacajlux’s truck on foot and caught up to it when traffic slowed on Woodside Road. The Jeep passenger grabbed onto the truck in attempt to stop it, while Chacajlux accelerated the vehicle. The passenger then fell from the truck and was run over by it, police said. Redwood City police, fire and medical personnel responded to the 800 block of Woodside Road on Tuesday at 7:41 p.m. regarding a fatal vehicle collision. Upon arrival on scene, Chacajlux’s whereabouts were unknown, and the 36-year-old man required immediate aid and life saving measures. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office had not released the man’s identity as of Thursday morning. Redwood City police detectives gathered surveillance video, followed leads and interviewed surrounding witnesses. A police drone also eventually located Chacajlux’s abandoned Ford pickup truck a short distance from the scene and it was seized by police as evidence. Police said anyone with information regarding the fatal collision is asked to contact the Redwood City Police Department at 650-780-7100. ...read more read less
