Lyndon Carew Credit: Courtesy Lyndon “Lyn” B. Carew Jr., PhD, passed away on June 27, 2026 at the Arbors in Shelburne, Vt. Lyn was born on November 27, 1932, in Lynn, Mass. He graduated from the Essex Agricultural Institute in Hathorne, Mass., in 1950 with top honors and received a BS cum la ude in genetics and poultry science at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1955 and a PhD in animal nutrition, biochemistry and endocrinology from Cornell University in 1961. Teaching was his great love. Lyn taught over 20,000 students at the University of Vermont during his career in human nutrition, foods, animal science and poultry science, including his very popular introductory course, Fundamentals of Nutrition. He loved the classroom and won many teaching awards. He believed that at UVM he had achieved the best career possible, surrounded by wonderful people, too many to mention, but they know who they are. Because the students in his large 250-student class stayed the same age each year, Lyn commented that “he always felt he never grew old while he was teaching.” He continued teaching until he was 78 and remained in contact with students and the UVM community well after that. In 1980, Lyn developed the first computerized, online, college-level nutrition course in the world, well ahead of developments in the computer field. This program evolved from an 8-inch floppy disk-based program to a sophisticated World Wide Web program in the 1990s, used by people around the world. He was a freelance nutrition journalist at the Shelburne News and South Burlington’s the Other Paper and wrote monthly columns on human nutrition. In 2010, he wrote a book, Musings of a Vermont Nutritionist, based on these columns. After retirement he continued weekly conversations in Spanish with several local groups and developed a fair ability to play the ukulele. He adored friends he met through these activities, especially Chris and Jim Runcie and Cindy Messenger, as well as those in the Charlotte and Hinesburg groups and too many others to mention. Abrazos a todos. Lyn is survived by his daughters, Leslie of Charlotte and Audre of Williston, the most precious gifts of his life. He is also survived by his ex-wife, Lynn Harrington Carew. Lyn also leaves his dearest friend and love of his life for many years, Alida Lund, who was a wonderful support and shared many great experiences with him; as well as many dear colleagues, students and friends, especially Fran Alster Kinghorn, who shared over 20 years of fun-filled, productive scholarly and research work at UVM and who was a big part of his life right until the end. He had many fond memories of times spent with longtime friends Geoff and Dr. George Osol. Please join us for a celebration of life on September 13, 2026, 1 to 4 p.m., in the Livak Ballroom in the Davis Center at UVM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to your favorite local charity, as Lyn had done for most of his life. For a full obituary please visit gregorycremation.com or gb774.app.goo.gl/ecjnb.
