Search for missing Oceanside mother takes divers to Palomar Mountain

Angelica Brophy is a lot of things to a lot of people. To her family, she’s a hands-on mother of two who loves to laugh and who sings off-key. To her co-workers, she’s a dedicated emergency room nurse at the Kaiser Hospital in San Marcos.
To Oceanside Police, she’s a missing person who h
asn’t been seen in more than a week.
Brophy was last seen on July 6. She visited Harrah’s Casino that afternoon and then drove to Palomar Mountain, a place where she often hiked with friends and family. When she didn’t return home that night, her husband called Oceanside Police to file a missing persons report.
Police tried pinging her cell phone, but it was either turned off or the battery was dead. Days later, Brophy’s car was found in a parking lot at Palomar State Park. She wasn’t in it.
Over the next 4 days, search-and-rescue teams walked the trails and searched the waters of Palomar but found nothing that led them to Angelica Brophy.
“It’s a wait and see,” said one of Brophy’s five older brothers. “I don’t want to go to dark places,” said Martin Fabregas, who flew in from Toronto to be with family in Oceanside. “We’re trying to encourage everybody to stay positive, stay strong.”
That’s hard to do as the family huddles together waiting for the phone to ring. Fabregas told NBC San Diego that every time the phone rings, his heart skips a beat, wondering whether the caller will deliver good or bad news.
“We’re all in a state of limbo right now and it’s hard to move on without any leads,” said Manny Fabregas, another brother of the missing woman.
Family members have been spending their time putting up missing-person posters all over the North County, hoping that someone with information will help bring Angelica Brophy home. The posters are also making the rounds on social media.
“She is one of the most wonderful, thoughtful women that I know,” said sister-in-law Lisa Fabregas. “She’s a very good mom. She will do anything for her children,” she added. “She is funny and kooky, and will sing at the top of her lungs and will not have one note in tune, but she does not care.”
“She loves life and we really just need her back,” said Lisa Fabregas.
Oceanside Police Captain Nick Nunez told NBC San Diego there is no indication of foul play in Brophy’s disappearance.
He added that detectives are reaching out to the security detail at Harrah’s Casino to see if anyone was with Brophy, or if anyone appeared to be following her. He did not know whether she’d won a large sum of money at the casino, but said detectives are working to get to the bottom of it.
If you have any information about Angelica Brophy’s disappearance, Oceanside Police ask you to give them a call at (760) 435-4900.
