New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani acknowledged the hours-long security-breach-related delay for fans ticketed to see Jay-Z perform at Yankee Stadium Sunday night, saying the city would “follow up” on the matter. The mayor didn’t immediately specify with whom, nor the kind of follow-up. He made the comments when he was asked for a response to the Sunday night incident at an unrelated press conference Monday. “Last night is something that we’re going to follow up on, because I know that there are many New Yorkers who were delayed after a breach of security by those who didn’t have tickets, and then it resulted in a multiple-hour delay for many others,” Mamdani said Monday. “So, that’s something we’ll follow up on.” The mayor said he was troubled by the security incident and praised the NYPD response. He said he didn’t go to the concerts (though he does discuss his favorite Jay-Z albums). The show had been supposed to start at 8 p.m. Sunday. It started at 12:17 a.m. Monday. Taking the stage after midnight, Jay-Z told the audience that “somebody rushed the door” and that he didn’t want to start performing and have “people get trampled” on their way in. “Really sorry for the inconvenience, but I had to make sure everybody was OK,” he told the crowd before thanking them for their patience and promising a “good time tonight.” In a statement, the Yankees, Jay-Z’s Roc Nation and Live Nation said hundreds of people in large groups without tickets “stormed over peaceful ticketholders, and in some cases, breached security” and the stadium had to shutter entrances for an extended period of time before being able to cautiously reopen. Video from outside the stadium showed a large crowd of people standing around an entrance. A different video from inside the stadium showed people rush in through an open door before several security guards stop others from entering. A spokesperson for the NYPD had no immediate information on possible arrests stemming from the incident. ...read more read less
