DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, (WOWO): The United States and Iran are both claiming control of the Strait of Hormuz, as new attacks across the Middle East threaten efforts to end the ongoing conflict. The waterway, located between Iran and Oman, is a major route for global energy shipments, with a bout one-fifth of the world’s traded oil and natural gas previously passing through it. The latest fighting began after Iran struck a container ship in the strait Sunday. The U.S. military says it responded with strikes on dozens of targets in Iran, including air defense systems, radar sites, missile and drone equipment, and small boats. U.S. Central Command said Iran does not control the strait and called it a vital corridor for global trade. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard rejected that claim, saying the waterway is part of its territory. The attacks have spread across the region, with missile alerts reported in Bahrain and Kuwait. Jordan’s military said it intercepted four Iranian missiles. World leaders are calling for the Strait of Hormuz to remain open as concerns grow that the conflict could escalate further.
