Nadine Menendez reports to prison amid ongoing breast cancer treatment

Nadine Menendez, the wife of former New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez, reported to federal prison Friday after a judge recently denied her last-minute attempt for an extension.
Menendez was required to surrender to the Federal Bureau of Prisons by 2 p.m. to begin her 54-month sentence. A spokesperson
for the bureau confirmed early Friday afternoon that she had turned herself in at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Tallahassee, Florida.
Last September, she was sentenced to 4 ½ years in prison for her role in a bribery scheme in which she and her husband, former Sen. Bob Menendez, took cash, gold bars, and a luxury car from New Jersey businessmen.
A judge delayed her sentence for months to allow her to undergo treatment for breast cancer.
Menendez’s lawyers, last week, asked again for an extension — until October 30 — to allow time for additional medical procedures. The judge denied that request.
Prosecutors had objected to it, saying they were not told of any delays in medical treatment for the 58-year-old Menendez. They added, based on the medical information provided by Menendez’s lawyers, that BOP is able to render any necessary medical care.
“BOP cares for many inmates with a variety of medical conditions, including conditions that were being handled by outside medical professionals before the inmate surrendered. The same is true here,” prosecutors wrote in their response last week.

Bob Menendez resigned from his U.S. Senate seat after his bribery convictions. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison and is serving his time at FCI Allenwood Low in Pennsylvania.
