Two swim beaches at Joe Pool Lake remain closed due to sewer main rupture

The Loyd Park boat ramp at Joe Pool Lake reopened Thursday after the City of Grand Prairie temporarily closed boat ramps following a ruptured sewer main that caused a sewage spill over the weekend.
Swim beaches at Lynn Creek and Loyd Park remain closed as Grand Prairie and Trinity River Authority
continue to monitor bacteria levels following the line break on July 4.
The spill, which exceeded 100,000 gallons, happened on Saturday at around 2 p.m. when a 30-inch wastewater pipeline ruptured.
According to a press release, “TRA was notified about the outflow from City of Grand Prairie Loyd Park staff on Saturday.”
The rupture was located at 6321 Mirabella Blvd in Arlington. The outflow, according to TRA, has not affected drinking water or service to any customers.
All other areas of Joe Pool Lake remain open.
While public drinking water and aquatic life has not been affected, TRA did warn those with private water wells.
“People using private drinking water supply wells located within 1/2-mile of the spill site or within the potentially affected area should use only water that has been distilled or boiled at a rolling boil for at least one minute for all personal uses including drinking, cooking, bathing, and tooth brushing,” TRA said. “Individuals with private water wells should have their well water tested and disinfected, if necessary, prior to discontinuing distillation or boiling.”
After the break, sampling indicated both swim beaches and the Loyd Park boat ramp should remain closed until state water quality standards were met.
According to a spokesperson for the City of Grand Prairie, the USACE requires five days of sampling for confirmation to re-open swim beaches. This restriction does not apply to fishing or boating activities.
TCEQ Dallas Fort Worth Regional staff are also investigating the spill.
“As part of the investigation, TCEQ will require a final report be submitted which includes verification that background conditions have been restored. The investigation is ongoing,” a spokesperson for TCEQ said in an email.
Grand Prairie is continuing to monitor the situation and make updates as more information becomes available.
