The alleged gunman who opened fire at a Fourth of July barbeque in Brooklyn, injuring four adults and four children, was arrested and faces multiple charges, according to police. Robert Smith was charged with eight counts of attempted murder for his role in the shooting outside of a housing compl ex near Surf Avenue and West 30th Street in Coney Island, police said. The shooting took place in the courtyard of a high-rise building around 10:30 p.m. Saturday. Investigators said the victims had been enjoying a family cookout when Smith, dressed in all black and wearing a ski mask, approached the fence and fired repeatedly. “People were running, people were screaming, kids were screaming,” a witness said. Eight people were struck by the gunshots, including four kids between the ages of 6 and 14 years old. The mother of a 6-year-old told NBC New York that her little boy was recovering from a gunshot wound to the chest. A 21-year-old woman was also critically wounded. Smith fled the scene immediately after opening fire, according to police. But investigators recovered a TEC-9 semiautomatic handgun with an extended magazine at the scene, along with 10 discharged shell casings. Police said Wednesday Smith had been arrested. Attorney information for the 44-year-old was not immediately available. It was still unclear why the suspect may have fired at the party. The NYPD had been investigating whether the mass shooting was connected to a gang-related killing that happened earlier in the week on the same block. “When I came downstairs, I’m like, ‘all my grands got shot.’ I’m just going crazy right now,” said a woman who identified herself as a grandmother of the young victims. She spoke with NBC New York on Sunday about the family gathering that turned into chaos. “They’re in the hospital, we were just having a party for the kids,” she said. ...read more read less
