Karmelo Anthony's attorneys ask for new trial, new judge in Frisco track meet murder case
Jul 07, 2026
Karmelo Anthony’s new defense team filed several motions Tuesday in a move to appeal his murder conviction in the stabbing death of Austin Metcalf at a 2025 Frisco ISD track meet.
A Collin County jury found 19-year-old Anthony guilty of murder in connection with Metcalf’s death in June and se
ntenced him to 35 years in prison.
The case centered on an altercation between Anthony and Metcalf during the track meet. Anthony said he was threatened and pulled out a knife, stabbing and killing Metcalf.
On Tuesday afternoon, Anthony’s legal team filed a formal request for a new trial.
The motion is based on several claims, including that Anthony’s right to a public trial was violated by restricted public access. His attorneys also argue the court improperly limited his right to claim self-defense in the case.
Anthony’s team is also asking that Judge John Roach, who oversaw the trial, be removed from the case because of “problematic comments” he made during a television interview after the trial, in which he shared his personal opinions about the case, the jury’s verdict, and his own rulings.
Anthony is currently serving his sentence in the Wallace Pack Unit in Navasota.
