Union Pacific's ‘Big Boy' ends South Philly display early due to heat
Jul 05, 2026
If you were hoping to visit Union Pacific’s Big Boy, the largest steam locomotive in the world that’s still in operation, while it was in Philly, you may have just missed your chance.
That’s because, as of 1:30 p.m., officials have ended the public display of the mammoth locomotive at the N
avy Yard in South Philly due to excessive heat.
In a statement online, organizers apologized for cutting the display short.
Yet, if you’re still hoping to see the locomotive before it chugs on out of the state, Big Boy will be making a few more stops in Pennsylvania this coming week before it heads out to Ohio next week.
A full schedule of Big Boy’s availability to the public can be found, here.
