Jul 04, 2026
Shane Peterman is ready for a new challenge. Peterman, WaterTower Theatre’s (WTT) Producing Artistic Director since 2019, departed the Addison-based theater company in June to become CEO of The Augusta Players and The Imperial Theatre in Augusta, Georgia.

The Imperial Theatre opened in 1918 as a vaudeville showcase, and it is the only operating historic theatre in Augusta. The Augusta Players is a non-profit community theatre organization founded in 1945. Peterman will lead both organizations as they work towards a proposed merger.
“It felt it was time to pass things on to new leadership at WTT. I had a few opportunities pop up and Augusta felt really right. Two companies with just about 200 years of history merging, and a beautiful 185 seat theatre. I’m very excited by the opportunity and humbled by the challenge coupled with an authentic feeling of community in that region. They have been amazing at welcoming me and there is great support,” Peterman said.
Peterman’s appointment concludes a national search involving board leadership, search committee members, staff, and community stakeholders representing both organizations.
“Shane brings the rare combination of artistic understanding, business discipline, warmth, and vision that this moment requires,” said M. Amy Patton, Interim CEO of The Augusta Players and Search Committee Co-Chair. “He understands that strong organizations are built through trust, transparency, relationships, and mission. We believe Shane is the right leader to help guide this next chapter.”
“We are excited to welcome Shane to Augusta’s arts community. He brings exceptional talent and energy that will invigorate The Imperial Theatre, The Augusta Players, and the entire downtown theatre district,” said Chip Matson, Board Chair of the Imperial Theatre.

Peterman’s years at WaterTower Theatre were eventful, encompassing financial difficulties and a global pandemic.
“From the brink of closure in 2019 to surviving the pandemic and subsequent challenges in regional theatre. WTT is a survivor. I’m very proud of our resilience for seven years,” Peterman said.
As Peterman started his new job on June 15, he reflected on what he will miss most about WaterTower Theatre.
“The people. Patrons, board, staff, amazing artists; I’ve learned a lot and am excited to carry that with me into my next position as CEO,” Peterman said.
In an email sent to patrons on July 1, WaterTower Theatre announced changes to its Season 30 schedule as it navigates this leadership transition and considers financial realities.
“After careful consideration, we have made the financial decision to cancel Wonderland, which was scheduled to close our 30th season this October. This was not a decision made lightly, and we know it is disappointing news. For our Season 30 subscribers and those who have already purchased tickets for Wonderland: your ticket value is protected, and our box office will follow up directly with details and options,” said JC Schuster, WaterTower Theatre’s Interim Producing Artistic Director. “At the same time, this change will allow us to bring our Season 31 BWY x NTX (Broadway by North Texas) performance back home to The Addison Performing Arts Centre. Stay tuned for more details!”
