Unlike traditional thoroughbred racing — think the Kentucky Derby — harness racing features drivers seated in a two-wheeled cart called a sulky, being pulled by the horse at speeds of up to 35 mph. “That’s a half-ton animal going 35 miles per hour out there on the racetrack,” the representative said. “They love their job. The drivers behind them are athletes, too.” Those drivers are true professionals. Many compete in 10 to 14 races a night, controlling their horse with just two leather lines — a feat that requires both physical strength and sharp instincts. “They’re controlling a half-ton animal with just two pieces of leather lines,” the representative said. “That’s a lot of work out there, and you’re putting a lot at risk going that fast. So those drivers put in so much time.
