Hoosier Park goes all out for America’s 250th Fourth of July celebration

LSL – Fourth of July at Harrah’s Hoosier Park
Racing, fireworks, and family fun make this one of the biggest nights of the year at Hoosier Park
If you’re looking for a way to celebrate the Fourth of July — and America’s 250th birthday — look no further than Hoosier Park Racing
Casino in Anderson, Indiana.
The track is pulling out all the stops for what promises to be one of its biggest nights of the year, and if last year is any indication, you won’t want to miss it. Hoosier Park drew a record crowd of more than 4,000 fans for its Fourth of July event in 2024, and organizers say this year’s celebration — timed to America’s 250th anniversary — is shaping up to be even bigger.
“This is always a day you just don’t want to miss at Hoosier Park,” said a park representative. “One of my favorite days of the year. The biggest on-track crowd we have.”
A Night Built for the Whole Family
The evening centers around live harness racing, but there’s plenty happening beyond the rail to keep the whole family entertained. Yard games, a balloon artist and a stilt walker will be spread across the track apron, giving kids — and adults — plenty to do between races.
“That’s the whole premise behind all of this,” the representative said. “We want the whole family to come out. On the racing side of the property, all ages are welcome. We want that sense of community.”
Guests are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and stake out a spot on the track apron early. The park will also have food trucks on-site, plenty of water stations, and even a snow cone truck to help beat the heat.
11 Races, Then Fireworks
Racing gets underway at 5:30 p.m. with an 11-race card. The final race is expected to wrap up between 9:30 and 10 p.m., with the fireworks show kicking off shortly after.
Throughout the evening, fans can take part in on-track promotions and giveaways, with chances to win cash prizes along the way.
Gates open between 5 and 6 p.m., and organizers say arriving early is key to getting a prime spot on the apron.
“Be sure to get there early and get your spot saved,” the representative said. “We’ll have on-track promotions going on all day, some cool giveaways, some promotions where you can win some good cash.”
Beating the Heat
With temperatures running warm across central Indiana this week, Hoosier Park wants fans to come prepared. The park recommends bringing water, taking advantage of the food and beverage options on-site, and knowing that relief comes naturally once the sun goes down — since all racing takes place in the evening.
“We race in the evening, so we get a little bit of relief once the sun goes down,” the representative said. “We’ll have plenty of options available for you — a snow cone ice food truck as well — so we’ll be sure to keep it cool out there.”
More Than Just Horse Racing
For those who’ve never experienced harness racing, the Fourth of July event is a great introduction. Unlike traditional thoroughbred racing — think the Kentucky Derby — harness racing features drivers seated in a two-wheeled cart called a sulky, being pulled by the horse at speeds of up to 35 mph.
“That’s a half-ton animal going 35 miles per hour out there on the racetrack,” the representative said. “They love their job. The drivers behind them are athletes, too.”
Those drivers are true professionals. Many compete in 10 to 14 races a night, controlling their horse with just two leather lines — a feat that requires both physical strength and sharp instincts.
“They’re controlling a half-ton animal with just two pieces of leather lines,” the representative said. “That’s a lot of work out there, and you’re putting a lot at risk going that fast. So those drivers put in so much time. But they’re ultimate professionals.”
