Could rain ruin July 4th fireworks? Forecast calls for more heat, humidity and storms
Jul 03, 2026
Our withering heat wave will extend through July Fourth before finally coming to an end. Independence day comes with storms, too, making it a less-than-perfect holiday for barbecue and fireworks enthusiasts.
Temperatures on July Fourth will reach the mid-90s in the city, with low 100s likely agai
n in Central and South Jersey. Heat indices will reach the low triple-digits for many in the tri-state area, so it’s another day to limit your activity outside.
The intense dome of high pressure responsible for the extreme heat this week will begin to retreat Saturday, opening the door for increased chances for storms Saturday afternoon and evening. That could put a damper on barbecue and fireworks plans for some.
The best chance for storms will be from mid-afternoon through the evening, prime time for outdoor Fourth of July activities.
Wherever you are in the tri-state, it won’t be raining the whole day or evening. Rather, most of time it will be dry— and hot.
But be prepared thunderstorm or two to pass overhead before the day is done. Heavy downpours, lightning and very strong winds will be the things to watch out for. Similar to Friday evening’s storms, they’ll probably last for between 30 minutes and an hour before moving along.
Now is the perfect time to download the NBCNewYork app to have live radar in the palm of your hand. Turn on weather alerts to get immediate warnings when severe weather – or even simple showers – are about to move over your location.
In the wake of Saturday’s storms, less hot conditions take over for Sunday. Highs will be in the mid-80s and there will be another chance for isolated storms late in the day.
