An explosive device found inside the garage of a St. Petersburg home prompted a bomb squad response, temporary evacuations, and a controlled detonation after it was deemed too unstable to move.According to the St. Petersburg Pol
ice Department (SPPD), the device was discovered after a homeowner died at a residence in the 7200 block of Eighth Street N. Officers requested assistance from the Tampa Bomb Squad, which determined the device could not be transported safely.The bomb squad buried the device in the backyard and detonated it to render it safe. Nearby mobile homes on the dead-end street were temporarily evacuated during the operation.Police later said the device is being safely burned underground, a process expected to take about an hour.Authorities said there were no injuries or property damage. Officers will remain at the scene until the area is fully cleared.
