The Stranger’s primary election endorsements are out! You can read them here. The concept of fair elections has me feeling almost patriotic ahead of the Big 250, and boy am I pumped. If any of you patriots can’t make it to the Great American State Fair and are consumed by FOMO, try this: Fin d an empty public park, blast some Flo Rida, and salute the empty air. It’ll be exactly like the real thing (according to CNN, Trump was “enraged” by the thin crowd at his kickoff speech). Seattle’s beaches are algae free, so you’ll have to do your best to imagine the reflecting pool. If it helps, New York Magazine has cataloged all that’s gone wrong at the grand old fair. You May Not Have to Imagine the President or Vice President: The US Men’s National Team won its match against Bosnia-Herzegovina last night, which means it’ll return for a match at Lumen Field Seattle Stadium on July 6th for the Round of 16 match against Belgium. President Donald Trump, who hasn’t visited Seattle in his second term, or Vice President JD Vance may* drop in on us. Trump hasn’t attended a World Cup game (perhaps he’s scarred by the crowd booing him during the NBA finals, or perhaps soccer is too European for him) but his officials have, and according to KING 5, the Federal Aviation Administration notified local flight company Kenmore Air of a possible visit last week. The White House did not return KING 5’s request for comment. The Belgians had a good time when they played their Round of 32 match here against Senegal, but the public should do its best to make sure neither of these bozos leave un-shamed. *UPDATE: They’re not coming :(. “We’ve been told that neither the president nor the vice president will be attending the July 6 match,” Cameron Satterfield, communications manager with the country’s Department of Executive Services, wrote in an email to The Seattle Times. The Tickets Are Super Expensive: Minutes after the US won, resale tickets jumped to about $3,000. Tickets to the US vs Australia game started at around $2,000. If the US beats Belgium on Monday, it’ll be the third time in history that the US makes it to the quarterfinals. But it’ll be tricky, especially since star player Folarin Balogun received a red card during Wednesday’s game and won’t be eligible to play Monday. I’m told—by the person editing this post—that this is “big drama” in the USMNT world. No word yet on how the TMNT world feels about this. According to new analysis from the Intercept, women in the army are four times more likely to be killed by fellow soldiers than by enemy combatants. Between 2011 and August 2025, 41 women “died by homicide in the Army—more than half of them at the hands of other service members or veterans.” Over 70 percent of the victims were killed by a current or former romantic partner. *Hearty Bezos Laugh* Amazon’s latest sustainability report shows that the local bookseller’s carbon emissions jumped 16 percent last year, in large part due to its data center buildout, KUOW reports. The company, which pledged to have net zero emissions by 2040, increased its “indirect emissions from purchasing electricity by 34 percent in 2025.” Union Business: White collar union employees at local airplane maker Boeing will begin contract negotiations on July 1 to iron out two collective bargaining agreements for the largest units in The Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA). One contract for 13,000 engineers and scientists and another contract for 4,000 analysts, technicians, planners, and specialists. Boeing and SPEEA haven’t had a full contract negotiation in 14 years. Members in both units have agreed to extend the 2013 contract twice.  Art is Fine: After an “international search,” the Seattle Art Museum hired Frank Feltens as chief curator, who was most recently the associate director for curatorial affairs and curator of Japanese art at  Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art in Washington, DC. Felten’s predecessor, José Carlos Diaz, left for the Pérez Art Museum Miami last fall. Shooting in the University District: The Seattle Police Department is investigating a shooting near the Raising Cane’s on University Way NE. Seattle police say a suspect in all black shot someone at around 2:20 am. The victim was taken to Harborview with non life-threatening injuries. The suspect was last seen headed north from the area, King 5 reports. Insane Headline for Spokane’s Hoopfest: “Hundreds injured in weekend hooping” Did You Feel That? A 3.8 magnitude quake a little more than a mile east of Oak Harbor shook Whidbey Island last night. Opus Dei: The Vatican excommunicated a group of schismatic, fascist Catholics (“traditionalist” is too kind for a religious fraternity founded by a Nazi-supporting, Vichy antisemite), the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX), who consecrated bishops without the Pope’s consent. The SSPX were formed in 1970 to oppose liberalizing reforms. Anyway, here’s Smash Mouth.
