The incident happened in, what officials called, a “low-speed situation” when the rear wheels of the train skipped off the tracks.
Officials said 47 people were on board when the incident occurred and there were no reported injuries.
Impact on the morning commute
However, because of the derailment, there was a significant impact on Regional Rail services throughout the city early Wednesday and that impact was expected to be felt throughout the day.
As of about 6 a.m., officials said, these are the impacted lines:
Lines out of service until further notice
Manayunk-Norristown
Fox Chase
Chestnut Hill East
Stopping at Fern Rock — passengers can transfer to Broad Street Line
Lansdale-Doylestown
Warminster
West Trenton
Operating to and from Suburban Station — no service to Jefferson Station
Airport
Media/Wawa
Wilmington/Newark
Paoli/Thorndale
Passengers looking to travel to Center City will need to use Suburban Station or transfer to the L — the Market-Frankford Line — at City Hall, SEPTA said.
Remaining lines, officials said, will terminate at Suburban Station.
The train involved in the derailment remained at a junction in North Philly early Wednesday as crews were working to address the situation.
Officials with SEPTA did not immediately say when service might be restored across the system.
Wednesday morning’s train derailment comes just hours after a CSX train derailed in Bensalem on Tuesday afternoon.
In that case, at least 13 trains derailed while traveling the the tracks at East Bristol Road and Grove Avenue near the Neshaminy Falls Train Station, officials said.
