Former Fairfield police officer charged, surrenders in case of K9 death

The Fairfield Police Department announced a K9 (canine) Officer died earlier this month; the Ennis Police Department is investigating the incident.
A Fairfield police officer, Joseph Silas, was let go on June 18, six days after the German shepherd died, after Fairfield’s Internal Affairs divisi
on investigated. That officer is facing a “cruelty to non-livestock animals” charge in Ennis, which is a third-degree felony.
Silas surrendered to the Ennis Police Department after a warrant was issued. He secured a bond and has been released.
Silas was a two-year member of the Fairfield police force.
The Fairfield department said the incident occurred at Silas’s “personal residence” and that any questions about the charges “can be answered by the Ennis Police Department.”
It’s unclear how the dog died.
