Just days after an elderly man filed a $35 million claim against the city of San Diego after falling on an exposed parking meter base in Mission Hills, the city is taking action to make the street safer. On Tuesday, NBC San Diego noticed city crews paving over the metal base of an old parking met er near the corner of West Washington Street and Albatross Drive. It comes more than a year after the city removed the parking meter, leaving the raised base and bolts in the sidewalk. Last month, a 70-year-old man was walking to his car, when he tripped on that base. NBC San Diego has video of the fall, which may be hard to watch. Viewer discretion is advised. Video shows the man falling head-first onto his car. The man’s attorney, William M. Berman, says he broke his neck and back and now needs 24-hour medical care. Berman says there are other similar hazards in Mission Hills, Hillcrest, and near Balboa Park. The city has previously said it cannot comment on the incident, the claim, nor pending litigation.
