A 20-year-old Temple University student has been identified as the victim in a deadly hit-and-run in North Philadelphia on Wednesday, June 24, officials said.
A Temple spokesperson confirmed to NBC10 on Tuesday that 20-year-old Bryce Wolfe, an actuarial science major within the Fox School of Bus
iness, was killed as he drove a motorcycle down Kelly Drive.
The initial crash occurred at around 11:15 p.m. at the intersection of Kelly Drive and Reservoir Drive after a white SUV traveling eastbound on Kelly Drive tried to make an illegal U-turn onto Reservoir Drive, police said.
After realizing a U-turn could not be completed, the driver of the white SUV tried to return to the eastbound lanes and entered into the path of Wolfe’s 2004 Triumph motorcycle that was traveling westbound, police said.
Wolfe struck the white SUV and became lodged underneath the vehicle, police said. The white SUV then dragged Wolfe “for more than one mile—from Reservoir Drive to the area of Fountain Green Drive—before the victim became dislodged.”
Police said that Wolfe was wearing a helmet and was taken to the hospital, where he was listed in critical condition with a fractured right leg and extensive road burns on his head and face. But he was pronounced dead at 4:41 a.m. Thursday morning.
Investigators are still trying to determine the make and model of the white SUV involved, but police said they believe the car “may have broken glass on the driver’s side and damage to the driver’s-side front wheel well, fender, and/or driver’s-side door.”
In a message to the Temple community, school leaders said that Wolfe was a rising junior from Conyngham, Pennsylvania, who maintained a high GPA and was enrolled in Fox Honors programs.
“Bryce was also deeply involved outside of class as he was a member of the student professional organization Gamma Iota Sigma and had recently started an internship with United States Liability Insurance Group,” the school said. “There is no doubt that he had a very bright future ahead of him, and that’s what makes delivering this news especially difficult.”
“A terrible event like this reminds us how fragile life can be. It will no doubt affect many of us and in a variety of ways. We extend our thoughts and deepest sympathies to those who were closest to Bryce, especially his family and friends,” the school added.
Anyone who believes they may have seen the car or has other useful information is urged to contact the Philadelphia Police Department’s Crash Investigation Division at 215-685-3181 or anonymously online here.
