Courtesy of Connoisseur Media Lincoln.LINCOLN–(KFOR June 30)–Officials with ACLU Nebraska reacted to the news Tuesday that the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld state bans on transgender athletes in women and girls’ sports. Nebraska is one of 29 states that have bans on transgender women and girls from playing on school sports teams for women and girls. ACLU Nebraska policy director Cassie Ross tells KFOR News the ruling doesn’t put students in a safer position, adding it will contribute to gender policing. “It’s to learn perseverance, dedication, teamwork and simply to have fun with their peers,” Ross said.  “And we should want more young people to play sports, not to put up more barriers.” The cases brought before the Court dealt with athletes from West Virginia and Idaho, but in today’s ruling, the Court’s conservative majority has paved the way for dozens of Republican-led states, including Nebraska, to keep similar bans on transgender athletes. The court’s holding is that states may ban transgender athletes from girls and womens sports, with Justice Brett Kavanaugh citing the need to reduce the risk of physical injury and ensure fair competition.
