San Diego police were searching Tuesday for a person believed to have a gun in the Mission Valley riverbed area after at least one officer opened fire on the individual, the agency said. The search was being conducted in the riverbed between Pacific Highway and Morena Boulevard, just north of Interstate 8 around 10:30 a.m., San Diego police said in a post on X. The incident began around 9:45 a.m. after officers made contact with an individual with parole violations, according to a San Diego police spokesperson. The individual appeared to have a handgun, so at least one officer opened fire, the spokesperson said. It was not clear if the individual fired a weapon. No officers were injured. The individual was not struck, police said. The individual then fled the scene, prompting a search of the riverbed via ground search, air support and with SWAT officers. Police urged individuals to avoid the area surrounding the riverbed as officers search for a suspect. California Highway Patrol shut down southbound Interstate 5 to eastbound I-8 for the investigation. This is a developing story. Details may change as information is released.
