Tyler Franklin)State highway officials say Louisville drivers should allow extra time over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, even though a two-mile stretch of Interstate 65 reopened Monday morning.The highway that cuts through central Louisville shut down at the start of the month for crews to work on aging overpasses.Officials with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet say southbound lanes from University Boulevard to the Watterson Expressway are now open to drivers. On- and off-ramps at Crittenden Drive and on-ramps from Eastern Boulevard and University Boulevard are also back in action.“It’s important for drivers to know they will likely encounter increased traffic on detour routes and local streets,” officials with KYTC said in a press release.They’re encouraging drivers to plan for delays, use official detour routes and make sure anyone visiting them in Louisville knows about the I-65 closure so they can plan for it.(I-65 Central Corridor)While the major closure between downtown Louisville and the Watterson is expected to wrap up at the end of July, officials say construction will continue through 2027.AAA estimates 61.4 million people will take road trips in the United States this week, similar to this time last year, even though average gas prices are up compared to last July. ...read more read less
