The results are in! The Fort Worth Zoo in Texas earlier this month sought out the help of TODAY viewers to vote on a name for their newborn baby girl giraffe. Thousands participated, and we are now ready to share the winning moniker. The giraffe, who was born on May 31 to mom Kala and Dad Apol lo, is officially named Kumi! The results are in! Three names were in the running, with Kumi coming out on top, drawing 41.24% of the vote. The name just edged out “Honey,” which got 40.40% of the vote. “Iris,” which finished last, received 18.37% of the votes. According to the zoo, the name Kumi is particularly significant as it translates to the number 10 in Swahili. It honors the fact that the calf is mom Kala’s 10th baby. Kumi, with her mom Kala. The name isn’t the only good news from the Fort Worth Zoo. Just 13 days after Kumi was born, a second baby girl calf joined the zoo. While the newborn shares a father with Kumi, she has a different mother, a giraffe named Acacia. The zoo is currently finalizing a name for their newest little giraffe. But for now, she’s been nicknamed “shin guards” due to the darker brown coloring on her lower legs and her birth lining up with the World Cup, the zoo said.
