Online condolences may be made at www.vtfun eralhomes.com Marcel Lucien Rocheleau died in his home in Morrisville, Vermont on Friday June 19th, at age 77. Marcel was born June 10, 1949 in St. Albans to Ovila and Gabrielle (Godin) Rocheleau. He attended St. Albans schools and enjoyed the outdoors growing up. He was drafted and served in Vietnam in 1969-1970 as part of the 12th Cavalry regiment (D company, 1st battalion), receiving a bronze star for his service. His boyhood experiences in the Vermont woods contributed to his success at walking point in the Asian jungles as part of the Army’s first air mobile division. Upon return he earned a B.A. from Johnson State College followed by an M.A. in American Literature from the University of Vermont. Marcel was married to Theresa Callahan for 18 years and resided in Johnson, where sons Elliot and Emmerson grew up. He later married Susan Kimmerly and they lived in Hyde Park and Morrisville. Marcel was an astute fiscal analyst and worked in the Vermont state government in a variety of administrative positions. He last served as the Business Manager, for Children and Family Services. After his retirement in 2007, he helped found the New School of Montpelier and provided administrative and fiscal consultation in its early years. Marcel was known for his sharp wit, love of laughter, and boundless energy. He could duct tape anything — and often did. His friendships lasted a lifetime. He fly-fished throughout the Northeast, from Lake Ontario to the West Branch Penobscot in Maine to Chappaquiddick Island. He loved the rivers and streams of Lamoille County most of all. Marcel was also a passionate hunter. He loved the pursuit, but even more he treasured the fellowship of the companions who joined him in the field, an affection that was fully and enthusiastically returned. He introduced each of his family members to the outdoors. He appreciated literature and art and, in particular, had a keen ear for music and compiled a large collection of CDs, vinyl, and speakers. He enjoyed refinishing furniture and collecting and maintaining his guns and fly rods. He took real pride in being able to pass on the objects and experiences that had given him such joy. He will be dearly missed by all whose lives he touched. He is survived by his wife Susan Kimmerly, sons Elliot Rocheleau (Kristin Miglinas), Emmerson Rocheleau (Kaylee Rumley), step son Elias Gardner (Sarah), and step daughter Julia Kimmerly, grandchildren Eliza, Oliver, and Nathaniel Rocheleau, James McLean, and Maeve and Evelyn Gardner, and sisters Helene Richard (Neil) and Diane Cowles (Jack). He was predeceased by a brother, Peter. A military service will be held July 9th at 11:00 a.m. at the Vermont Veterans cemetery in Randolph. Donations can be made to Lamoille Home Health and Hospice, Green Mountain Conservation Camp, or an organization dedicated to youth and the outdoors.
