EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — Evansville police had a news conference Friday after a detective on Thursday fatally shot a 24-year-old man.
Caleb Webber died on the scene of the shooting at a home in the 500 block of Colonial Avenue. That’s in the Country Club Meadows housing subdivision south
east of the intersection of West Buena Vista Road and North First Avenue.
Sgt. Anthony Aussieker, the police department’s public information officer, said in the Friday news conference that just before 1 p.m. Thursday, a 911 caller told dispatchers that Webber was possibly overdosing at a home in the 500 block of Colonial Ave. That’s in the Country Club Manor subdivision southeast of the intersection of West Buena Vista Road and North First Avenue.
A detective in plainclothes, who had training in giving medical aid to people suffering from overdoses, went to the home, where he identified himself as a police officer, and a woman allowed him inside the home.
The detective found Webber approaching in a hallway and pointing a gun. Webber fired a shot at the detective who was near the front door, and the detective returned fire. The detective and the woman fled outside the home, hiding behind a large tree, and Webber again pointed the gun at the detective and the woman. The detective fired more rounds and struck Webber, who fell to the ground.
The detective fired his weapon eight times, and Webber fired at least once, Aussieker said.
No one else was hurt in the shooting.
Because the detective was working out of uniform, he was not wearing a bodycam.
Aussieker said a search warrant was used to collect evidence in the house, but investigators did not yet know if drugs were in the home. Multiple guns belonging to Webber were found in the home.
Aussieker also said Webber’s criminal “history doesn’t play into this incident,” and, because the response was for an overdose, there was not time in advance to “dig into” his criminal past.
Online records for Indiana courts did not show any cases involving Webber.
An autopsy will be performed, and it may determine what kind of substances, if any, Webber had taken, Aussieker said.
During the news conference, police showed a photo of a chair next to the front door with a rod in the cushion. The rod showed the path of the bullet that Webber fired. Another photo showed the gun that Webber used, which had blood stains on it.
