Everyone’s got a current favorite, and usually a legendary spot from the old days they wish was still around. A good ha ppy hour shaves a few bucks off a couple of beers after work, but what makes a great happy hour? For starters, the “hour” part: Most of the spots on this map have a nice easy target to hit in the middle of the day and/or late at night, so it’s easy to coordinate a meetup with folks who have a diversity of schedules.  A truly classic happy hour should work equally well for a light meal, a dinner pre-game, or even the first part of a first date, and the food should match the moment. Even better if there’s a curated mix of drinking snacks and small entrees on its own special little menu, like a track list on a jazz album. These days a dollar-off well drinks is all well and good, but deeper discounts are what get people out of the house. The sub-$10 cocktail may be an endangered species on Portland menus, but they make regular appearances on this map.  This update adds several legendary spots from the four corners of the city, including Paymaster’s cantankerous “Angry Hours” and the Observatory’s crowd-pleasing garlic Parmesan fries.
