Avelo Airlines announced this week that the budget airline is adding a direct route from Tweed New Haven Airport to Aguadilla, Puerto Rico — roughly two-and-a-half years after Avelo first started flying between Tweed and San Juan. The budget airline made that announcement in an email press re lease Wednesday. Tweed airport sent out a separate press release on Thursday celebrating the news. According to the two press releases, Avelo will start flying from New Haven to Aguadilla, Puerto Rico’s Rafael Hernández Airport (BQN) on Thursday, Nov. 19. The airline will run twice-weekly service on Tuesdays and Thursdays, using Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft. Aguadilla is the second destination in Puerto Rico that Avelo will fly to from Tweed. The first, San Juan, has been an Avelo destination since November 2023. Avelo will also begin flying from Tweed to Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) on Sept. 21. That twice-weekly service will take place on Mondays and Fridays. Avelo previously flew to Houston’s Hobby Airport (HOU). “We’re excited to expand our New Haven network with new nonstop service to Aguadilla, Puerto Rico—making it easier and more affordable for our Customers to reach the island’s beautiful west coast,” Avelo CEO Andrew Levy is quoted as saying in Wednesday’s press release. “This new destination, alongside our newly announced service to Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport reflects our ongoing commitment to expanding convenient, low-fare travel options and strengthening connections between Southern Connecticut and key leisure and family destinations.” Thursday’s press release states that Tweed New Haven Airport now offers access to 35 different destintations. “Puerto Rico is both a world-class tourism destination and home to many family and cultural ties for Connecticut residents,” The New HVN CEO Michael Jones is quoted as saying. “With the community response to our direct San Juan flights from HVN, we are excited to be adding direct service to Aguadilla to expand access to a beautiful part of the island while making travel easier, more affordable, and more convenient for the communities we serve.” Avelo’s announcement comes more than four-and-a-half years after the budget airline first started flying out of the Morris Cove regional airport in November 2021. It also comes as Tweed continues to move forward with long-in-the-works plans to expand its runway and build a new larger terminal on the East Haven side of the property in order to attract more air service, prompting pushback from neighbors concerned about traffic, noise, and air pollution.
