One of San Antonio’s signature events will soon be lighting up a new location. The Luminaria Contemporary Arts Festival will return on November 14 to Houston Street at the intersection of Downtown West and Zona Cultural. The after-dark celebration will fill streets and sidewalks with digital projec tions, sculpture, live music, poetry, theater, dance, film, and food and art vendors from 6 pm-midnight. Meanwhile, anchor sites will stretch across the corridor, including the Centro/Art Everywhere Project, Texas Public Radio, San Pedro Creek, the Alameda Theater, Paseo on Houston, and UTSA's Institute of Texan Cultures. The relocation drops the festival into a downtown stretch that is in the thick of reinvention.“Festivals and public art have a unique power to activate shared spaces, spark curiosity, bring people together, and remind us of the stories that shape our city,” said Krystal Jones, Director of the City of San Antonio’s Department of Arts Culture, in a release. “That’s why it feels fitting for Luminaria to illuminate this part of downtown...”The festival will be augmented by an array of public art already installed in the area. Guests should be on the lookout for Gordon Huether's Presence of the Past and Culture Crossing Pavilion, the newly inaugurated St. James AME Church cornerstone structure, Rubio's Aqua at San Pedro Creek, Diana Kersey's Creatures of the Creek: A Fragile Balance on Commerce, and Rhys Munro's Metro Radiance at Santa Rosa and Commerce.Since being founded in 2008, Luminaria has had a variety of locations. It started near Alamo Plaza before spending years at Hemisfair and, more recently, St. Paul Square.Vendor applications are now open online, with feature artists to be announced in September. Those who can’t wait until the fall to get their art fix can check out Luminaria’s pop-up gallery series at the Aiden Hotel, where Creative Blooms is now on display through July 10. ...read more read less
