CHOP President Joseph Mitchell named the healthcare provider's new CEO
Jun 23, 2026
The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia announced Tuesday that President Joseph Mitchell will succeed Madeline Bell as CEO.
In a statement, CHOP officials said Bell will retire after spending nearly 40 years at the hospital, including serving for eight years as chief operating officer
and 11 years as CEO.
“Serving CHOP has been the honor of a lifetime,” said Bell, in a statement. “I am incredibly proud of how far this organization has come — and even more confident in where it is headed. Joe is a mission-driven leader with a deep commitment to children and families, and I know CHOP will continue to thrive under his leadership.”
Mitchell became president of CHOP in April 2025.
Before joining the hospital, he served as vice president at Boston Children’s Hospital and president of Franciscan Children’s.
CHOP officials said Bell shared her intention to retire with the board of trustees back in 2024, initiating a process to find a new leader for the healthcare provider.
In stepping into this role, officials said, Mitchell has worked closely with Bell to “advance CHOP’s strategic priorities and finalize efforts to expand its presence throughout the region.”
“CHOP is one of the most remarkable institutions in healthcare, with a mission that truly transforms lives,” Mitchell said in a statement. “It is a privilege to build on this legacy alongside an exceptional team. Together, we will keep advancing our work to ensure all children, in Philadelphia and beyond, have the opportunity to thrive.”
Mitchell’s tenure as CHOP’s new CEO will be effective come Oct. 1, 2026.
