Quiet weather settles back into the commonwealth the next few days
Jun 22, 2026
After a nice weekend to close out spring and welcome the summer season, our weather got quite active during the early hours of Monday as a wave of low pressure and a cold front worked through the commonwealth. Fortunately the organized severe weather stayed just to our west across Southern Ind
iana late Sunday but we did have to deal with some torrential rainfall here in the Bluegrass during the Monday morning commute. Lexington received around 2″ of rain between 8am and 9am, which created some street flooding in several locations. Additional showers and storms developed through the day as the front passed through with some locally heavy downpours. Temperatures still managed to reach the low to mid-80s even with the clouds and showers around and it felt quite muggy with all the moisture hanging over the state ahead of the cold front.
Our weather is looking much better as we head into Tuesday with high pressure building through the Great Lakes and into the Ohio Valley. After starting the day in the upper 50s with some patchy fog in spots, look for plenty of sunshine around along with lower humidity levels so it should be a pleasant day for late June. Afternoon highs look to top out either side of the 80 degree mark as a light north wind pushes drier air into the region.
The quiet weather should roll along into the mid-week as the area of high pressure settles southward into the heart of the Ohio Valley. With abundant sunshine around, Wednesday looks to be another banner day here in the Bluegrass with highs in the low 80s and comfortable humidity levels hanging around. It will definitely be a day you’ll want to spend a little time outdoors if you can. Another frontal system will be on the move and headed into the region as we roll into Thursday so look for a few scattered showers and storms to return to the commonwealth. Afternoon highs will remain pretty close to average for late June with highs in the mid-80s.
The aforementioned front should stall out over the area as we close out the week and head into the upcoming weekend so look for the scattered rain and storm chances to remain in place both Friday and Saturday. While it shouldn’t be a complete wash-out, the overall rain chances look legitimate with some locally heavy downpours possible given the time of the year it is. You’ll need to keep that in mind for any outdoor plans you have for Saturday. An upper level ridge looks to build eastward into the Ohio Valley heading into Sunday and early next week, which should bring drier and warmer air back into Kentucky. While our rain chances will drop, our temperatures will rise as afternoon highs climb back toward the 90 degree mark as a more summer-like pattern with heat and humidity kicks in.
