Starting Sunday night, multicolor lasers will beam light into the sky over downtown San Francisco as part of a new public art project called 7×7. This display will run overnight from June 21 through July 4 and is intended to celebrate San Francisco’s Pride festival, the FIFA World Cup, and Americ a’s 250th birthday celebration on the 4th of July. The display is slated to run every night from sunset to sunrise. These lasers were organized by the nonprofit Illuminate, which also leads the other major light displays in the city such as the Bay Bridge lights and the Market Street Pride Flag lights. San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie’s Office also collaborated on bringing this project forward. This display will be projected from 49 cannons (representing the 49 square miles of San Francisco), pointing towards the sky from the city’s Civic Center plaza. Illuminate founder Ben Davis explained that the lasers will be rainbow colors to celebrate Pride in San Francisco, and on the Fourth of July, they will be red, white, and blue.  But in between those times, he said organizers may experiment with other colors and patterns. Based on how other laser displays have gone in San Francisco, Davis expects people will be able to see this light display from miles away, even as far as mountaintops across the bay. He said that how visible the lasers are may come down to how the fog behaves, and organizers will learn more through the different weather patterns that unfold over the next 14 days. ...read more read less
