25 drivers crash in massive NASCAR accident at Naval Base Coronado
Jun 21, 2026
You’ve sat in traffic before, but it’s probably never been this bad.
In Saturday’s NASCAR O’Reilly Series race at Naval Base Coronado, 25 cars were involved in a crash that ended up halting the event for more than 40 minutes.
The accident occurred just after the restart for the final s
tage, as Sam Mayer clipped the inside wall in turn one and bounced back into Anthony Alfredo’s car. Both drivers then slammed the wall and caused a massive pile-up on the narrow circuit, as they were running toward the front of the field when they crashed.
Track workers spent the next 43 minutes and 10 seconds repairing a concrete wall that was pushed back several feet. No drivers were seriously injured, but Mayer, Alfredo and many others were out of the race due to significant damage.
Here’s a look at the crash:

In addition to Mayer and Alfredo, the other drivers involved were William Sawalich, Preston Pardus, Brennan Poole, Jeremy Clements, Alex Labbe, Sheldon Creed, Jesse Love, Justin Allgaier, Sammy Smith, Brad Perez, Brent Crews, Brandon Jones, eventual winner Austin Hill, Harrison Burton, Dean Thompson, Jeb Burton, Blaine Perkins, Andrew Patterson, Ryan Sieg, Baltazar Leguizamon, Austin Green, Rajah Caruth and Leland Honeyman Jr.
“First off, I just need to apologize for everybody in the field and everybody in the garage,” Mayer said afterward, via NASCAR.com. “I cannot be making mistakes like this, and I’m just heartbroken right now. I mean, I can’t be doing that. That’s just irresponsible, it’s embarrassing. I’ve got to be better.”

From NASCAR to World cup, San Diego weekend packed with events
This was the second red flag of the race after a manhole cover came loose and slammed through Corey Day’s front grill on the opening lap. Workers needed 18 minutes and 34 seconds to repair the track after that incident.
After the chaos, Austin Hill scored the victory with a last-lap pass of Taylor Gray. The Richard Childress Racing driver gave his team its first victory since Kyle Busch’s tragic death last month, providing an emotional scene in the post-race celebrations. Hill has filled in for Busch in the Cup Series, and will start Sunday’s Cup race in 10th driving Busch’s car.
The final of three NASCAR races at Naval Base Coronado is set for Sunday at 1:29 p.m. PT. The Cup Series is the headliner of the weekend after second- and third-tier series races on Saturday and Friday, respectively. NASCAR announced Thursday that both Saturday and Sunday’s races were sold out, with more than 50,000 fans and visitors expected each day.
