‘Pet Pals TV’: MidNorth Food Pantry steps up to help Indy families, pets during tough times
Jun 20, 2026
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Each and every week, “Pet Pals TV” shares a fun, interesting, and informative story about our four-legged and furry friend population.
On the latest “Pet Pals TV,” host Patty Spitler joined N
ews 8’s Pam Elliot, along with Kelsey Burton, the executive director of Mid-North Food Pantry.
The Mid-North Food Pantry, described as a longtime resource for families facing hardship, is expanding its services to meet growing demand as financial challenges weigh heavily on families in Indianapolis.
Burton notes that financial strain sometimes forces families to surrender their pets when they can no longer afford food or care.
The pantry works to help families stay together by distributing donated pet food — dog and cat food alike. Burton says whatever food they have goes out the door fast.
“We firmly believe no one should have to choose between paying a bill or keeping an animal and food,” Burton said. “Food is a human right, and we’re here to fill that gap.”
Operating for roughly 40 to 50 years, Burton says the pantry has experienced a 43% increase in families in 2025 compared to the year before.
Monetary donations go a long way, too. Burton says because of the pantry’s discounted purchasing power, a $10 donation can stretch up to three times further than the same amount spent at a grocery store.
For those who prefer to shop, the pantry’s most-needed items include peanut butter, jelly, and mac and cheese. Protein items are especially difficult to source through donations, so canned chicken, tuna, Spam, and other canned meats are always welcome.
“If you have $5 or $10 and you think, ‘I’ll pick up some extra stuff,’ if you just donate it directly to us, we’re going to be able to triple what you’re able to get,” Burton said.
Volunteers are just as essential as food donations. Burton said anyone can help — whether it’s a one-time visit or a recurring commitment — and many first-time volunteers find themselves coming back week after week.
“When you come, you want to come back,” Burton said.
To better accommodate those needing an extra hand, the pantry is now open from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays during June and July – except for July 4.
The pantry, located at 3333 N. Meridian St. in the Trinity Outreach Building, is hosting a Pullout Sunset fundraiser on July 24. All proceeds will benefit pantry services.
