A Beautiful Turnaround After Thursday’s Storms After strong to severe thunderstorms swept across Kentucky on Thursday, conditions have improved dramatically to start the day on Friday. Sunshine has returned across the region, temperatures have quickly climbed into the upper 60s and lower 70s th is morning, and much drier air is filtering into the Commonwealth behind the departing cold front. The storms that moved through Thursday brought heavy rainfall, gusty winds, frequent lightning, and even some localized flooding concerns. Now, a much more comfortable air mass has settled into the area, setting the stage for a pleasant end to the workweek. Sunshine and Lower Humidity for Juneteenth As we head through the rest of Juneteenth, expect plenty of sunshine and comfortable conditions across Central and Eastern Kentucky. Afternoon temperatures will climb into the upper 70s and lower 80s, which is right around normal for this time of year. One of the biggest changes compared to earlier this week will be the humidity. Dew points have fallen into the upper 50s and lower 60s, making it feel noticeably less humid outside. Combined with mostly sunny skies and light winds, it will be a fantastic day to spend time outdoors. Another Great Day Ahead on Saturday High pressure will remain firmly in control of our weather through Saturday, keeping conditions mostly dry and pleasant for the first half of Father’s Day weekend. Saturday will feature mostly sunny skies with temperatures warming into the low and middle 80s during the afternoon. Humidity levels will remain relatively comfortable, making for another excellent day for outdoor plans, sporting events, cookouts, and travel across the region. While an isolated sprinkle cannot be completely ruled out north of the Ohio River, the overwhelming majority of Kentucky will remain dry. Father’s Day Brings Returning Shower and Storm Chances The weather pattern will begin to change late Saturday night as the next storm system approaches the Ohio Valley from the west. Father’s Day is expected to start off dry for many locations, but scattered showers and thunderstorms will become increasingly likely during the afternoon and evening hours. A developing area of low pressure moving through the Great Lakes will help push moisture back into Kentucky, leading to a more unsettled pattern. Some storms could produce heavy downpours, especially west of Interstate 65 where atmospheric moisture levels are expected to be highest. There is also the potential for a few stronger storms, and this will be something to watch closely over the coming days. Unsettled Weather Continues Into Early Next Week The active pattern does not end with Father’s Day. Additional rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected Sunday night and into Monday as a slow-moving frontal boundary settles across the region. Repeated rounds of rain may lead to localized flooding concerns, particularly across parts of Central and South-Central Kentucky where rainfall totals could approach several inches by early next week. While there will certainly be dry periods mixed in, rain chances will remain elevated through Monday before gradually decreasing during the middle of next week. Temperatures during this period will stay near seasonal averages, generally ranging from the upper 70s to lower 80s. ABC 36 Storm Team 36-Hour Forecast Friday: Mostly sunny and less humid.
