San Francisco leaders to vote on new Embarcadero park plan
Jun 18, 2026
San Francisco leaders on Thursday will take another major step in reshaping the waterfront.
Now that Vaillancourt Fountain is gone, city leaders hope to move forward with a plan to transform Embarcadero Plaza into a new waterfront park.
Leaders will look to lock in the design for what replaces
the fountain. San Francisco Recreation and Parks is already working with outside partners on potential plans and is set to vote on those plans Thursday morning.
The latest renderings show the area where the fountain once stood will be filled in and transformed into an open area.
Leaders are considering a $40 million plan to transform the site into a 5-acre destination park that would combine the formerly-named Justin Herman Plaza and Sue Bierman Park and connect Market Street to the Ferry Building’s attractions.
Supervisor Danny Sauter recently introduced legislation accepting up to $20 million in private funding that would still need to be approved by the board of supervisors. Voter-approved funds from a 2024 bond will partially fund the project.
