NJ community mourning loss of high school student after deadly ebike crash

A school community in South Jersey is mourning the loss of a rising junior after a teenager on an e-bike was hit and killed by a UPS truck on Tuesday.
The crash occurred on Tuesday, June 16, around 10:45 a.m. at the intersection of Tranquility Court and North Firelane Road in Southampton Townshi
p, New Jersey, officials said.
According to New Jersey State Police, preliminary investigation found that the UPS truck was traveling south on Tranquility Court, approaching the intersection of North Firelane Road. At the same time, a teenager operating a Talaria electric dirt bike was traveling east on North Firelane Road.
Police said within the intersection, the front of the e-bike hit the right rear of the UPS truck.
As a result of the collision, the driver of the e-bike was thrown from the vehicle and died, officials said.
A parent who child goes to St. Augustine Preparatory School in Buena Vista Township told NBC10 that the teen was identified as Chase Sudano.
Sudano had reportedly just finished his sophomore year of high school.
In a post on social media, the school wrote that their community is mourning his loss.
“Chase was a beloved son, brother, friend, teammate, classmate, and Hermit Brother who will never be forgotten. He loved being a Hermit, cherished the Brotherhood he found at the Prep, and brought energy, joy, and an unconditional love of life to those around him. We ask the Hermit Brotherhood and all friends of the Prep to keep Chase, his family, and all who loved him in your prayers,” St. Augustine Prep wrote on social media.
There were no other injuries reported on scene.
A UPS spokesperson released a statement following the crash.
“We are heartbroken by the tragic accident in Southampton Township, NJ. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and loved ones,” a UPS spokesperson wrote. “We are fully cooperating with authorities to understand what happened. Since this is an active investigation, we must refer any additional questions to the authorities.”
Under a new law, riders must be at least 15-years-old to operate an e-bike in New Jersey starting in July. Riders will also need an e-bike license, permit or a valid driver’s license.
The case remains under investigation.
