Use of GLP-1 medications in early pregnancy INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A recent study from researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health analyzed over 3,500 insurance records of women who were taking a GLP-1 medication prior to conception, including over 40% of women with diabetes. When comparing women who continued taking one of the medications into the first trimester versus those who stopped, the difference in miscarriages was not statistically significant. Additionally, the medications did not seem to significantly increase the risk for low or high birth weight or birth defects. Some findings were imprecise, and more research is needed.  This study may offer some reassurance and decrease anxiety for women who may find out they are pregnant while taking one of these medications. However, GLP-1 medications are still not recommended in pregnancy or for those planning to get pregnant. Once a woman determines that she is pregnant while taking a GLP-1 medication, the medication should be stopped, and her physician or healthcare provider should be contacted. GLP-1 medications are recommended prior to conception, especially in individuals with diabetes type 2. These medications may improve a woman’s chances of getting pregnant as a result of weight reduction and improved insulin sensitivity.  While taking a GLP-1 medication, contraception use is recommended. Zepbound (Tirzepatide) may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptive pills (OCP). Women already taking an OCP may consider an alternative contraceptive if they plan to start Zepbound. ...read more read less
