Olney residents without water for hours after broken fire hydrant floods street
Jun 13, 2026
Residents in Philadelphia’s Olney neighborhood say they were without water for hours due to a broken fire hydrant.
A fire started on Friday around 2 p.m. along the 200 block of Sheldon Street. While the fire was placed under control, a fire hydrant was damaged, sending water gushing down the st
reet in the area.
“Water ran all night. For a large part of the evening it was fun. The kids were out, playing in the water, all that good stuff,” Patricia Fleming, a resident, told NBC10.
Fleming said she noticed water was still gushing out of the hydrant Friday night around 8 p.m., however.
“I tried 311 first. They were closed. Then I called 911, asked to be switched over to the fire department,” Fleming said. “Spoke to somebody at the fire department. They said they would call someone and then I called the water department. At that point, they said there were about 20 different calls already in place.”
Fleming said she went to sleep. When she woke up Saturday morning, she noticed her home was without water.
“Tried to flush the toilet. Tried to make a cup of coffee. No water,” she said.
Other residents in the neighborhood told NBC10 they’ve been without water since around 1 a.m. Saturday. NBC10’s Deanna Durante was at the scene hours later around 7:30 a.m. and spotted the residents outside on the street filling up buckets with water.
“Just making sure we have enough water to essentially flush the toilet at this point,” Fleming said.
The Philadelphia Water Department arrived at the scene around 8:30 a.m. Saturday and turned the water off. NBC10 remains at the scene and is checking to see if water service was restored for the residents.
