The 9,785-square-foot store – located at the corner of Freret Street and Napoleon Avenue on the former Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School site – is Trader Joe’s third location in the Greater New Orleans area and its fourth store in Louisiana. Trader Joe’s opened its Mid-City store at 2501 Tulane Ave. in August 2025, and its Metairie location at 2949 Veterans Blvd. in 2016. Its Baton Rouge location on Perkins Road opened in 2013. Additional locations have also been announced for Mandeville and Lafayette. In a company press release, Trader Joe’s said it hired more than 50 new crew members from surrounding areas and transferred other employees from nearby stores to staff the new Uptown location. Founded in 1967 in California, Trader Joe’s has more than 650 locations across the United States. The company markets itself as a value grocery store offering everyday staples alongside distinctive private-label products, rather than a large selection of national brands.
