A suspect died and two San Francisco police officers were injured Friday morning after all three were struck by a driver during a foot pursuit, the department said.
The suspect, who allegedly stole from a Trader Joe’s at California and Hyde streets, died at the hospital after the collision, pol
ice said. The police officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to recover.
Officers initially responded at about 7:36 a.m. to the Trader Joe’s to investigate a reported theft, according to police. Officers tried to detain the suspect, but the suspect resisted and took off on foot.
“The officers went after the suspect and the scene escalated into a violent struggle with the suspect in the middle of the street,” San Francisco Police Officers Association President Louis Wong said in a statement. “During the confrontation, a passing motorist struck the officers and suspect, pinning both officers beneath the vehicle.”
Both officers were taken to the hospital with leg injuries, Wong said.
The driver involved in the collision stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, police said.
An investigation is ongoing.
Mayor Daniel Lurie issued the following statement on social media: “Every day, our police officers put themselves in harm’s way to keep San Franciscans safe. I have spoken with both officers today and am wishing them a full and speedy recovery. Any loss of life is a tragedy. I am grateful to the first responders who acted quickly to render aid to everyone involved.”
