It’s Too Hot for School. Again
Jun 12, 2026
For the second time in roughly three weeks, “extreme heat” has led to early dismissals at all city public schools.
New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) alerted families on Thursday afternoon about Friday’s planned early dismissal.
“Due to predicted extreme heat, NHPS will have an early di
smissal for all schools tomorrow, June 12,” that message read. “Transportation will be provided to students who normally ride the bus. There will be no afterschool programs.
“Although we realize that early dismissals pose an inconvenience, we decided it was best to act out of an abundance of caution. Thank you for your partnership in ensuring student safety.”
NHPS spokesperson Justin Harmon confirmed for the Independent on Friday that transportation played a key role in leading to early dismissals at all, rather than just some, city public schools.
“Today’s heat projections were such that it seemed likely we would experience excessive temperatures in a number of buildings; dismissing a larger number of schools individually becomes disruptive to transportation schedules for the entire network,” Harmon wrote.
Friday’s early dismissals come less than a month after the district dismissed students two hours early on May 20, as temperatures reached the high 80s.
