WASHINGTON (WOWO): U.S. Sens. Todd Young, Mark Kelly and Jim Banks have introduced legislation aimed at improving the federal government’s ability to track how artificial intelligence is affecting the nation’s workforce. According to the lawmakers, the Artificial Intelligence Data Authorization and Transparency, or AI DATA, Act would modernize labor market surveys and reporting tools to provide workers, employers, educators and policymakers with better information about AI’s economic impact. Young said the legislation is intended to help Americans better understand how emerging AI technologies are changing jobs and industries. The bill would authorize updates to several major labor market surveys conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, including the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, the American Time Use Survey and the National Longitudinal Surveys. Under the proposal, the United States Census Bureau would also be required to add questions about AI adoption and workforce impacts to its Business Trends and Outlook Survey on a quarterly basis for the next 10 years. The legislation would further direct the Departments of Labor and Commerce to publish annual reports analyzing AI’s effects on employment, hiring, wages and workforce trends using federal labor and economic data. Supporters of the bill say better data will help businesses, workers and government leaders respond to rapid technological changes while ensuring the United States remains competitive in the global AI economy. The AI DATA Act has been introduced in the Senate and awaits further consideration by Congress.
