Red Cross seeks blood donors as summer supply declines
Jun 08, 2026
The American Red Cross is urging people to donate blood or platelets as it works to maintain a stable blood supply heading into the busy summer months.
The organization announced Monday that it has seen an “alarming drop” in scheduled donations in recent weeks and is encouraging donors of all
blood types to make appointments as soon as possible.
Summer travel, school breaks and end-of-school-year activities can lead to fewer donation appointments, according to the Red Cross. The start of the Atlantic hurricane season on June 1 also raises concerns because severe weather can disrupt blood drives and limit donation opportunities in affected areas.
The Red Cross said maintaining a strong supply of blood products is critical for hospitals and patients who rely on lifesaving transfusions.
As an incentive, people who donate blood or platelets between June 1 and June 28 will receive a $15 electronic gift card to a participating merchant of their choice. Donors will also be automatically entered for a chance to win one of two $7,500 gift cards.
North Texans can donate at the following Red Cross locations:
Irving Blood and Platelet Donation Center @ 2511 W. Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway
Monday and Tuesday: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Wednesday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

To donate, individuals generally must be at least 17 years old in most states, or 16 with parental consent where permitted by law, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in good health. Additional height and weight requirements apply to some younger donors.
The Red Cross said donors can schedule appointments through its website, mobile app or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS.
The organization is also seeking volunteers to support blood drives and help transport blood products to hospitals.
Officials said blood donor ambassadors assist with greeting, checking in and thanking donors, while transportation specialists help ensure blood products reach hospitals that need them.
More information about donating blood, scheduling an appointment or volunteering is available through the American Red Cross.
