Officials: 1 killed, 4 hurt — including first responder — in Olney house fire
Jun 08, 2026
One person was killed and four people have been hospitalized — including a first responder — officials said, after fire crews worked overnight to battle heavy flames that burned through at least one home in Philadelphia’s Olney neighborhood.
According to fire officials, the fire broke out j
ust before midnight in the area of 146 West Albanus Street and crews worked until at least 2:30 a.m. to get the flames under control.
However, officials said due to the length of nearby Roosevelt Boulevard, crews found it difficult to get water to the fire because of spacing between hydrants along the roadway.
In a morning update, Carl Randolph, first deputy fire commissioner for the Philadelphia Fire Department told NBC10’s Lili Zheng that one person — who initially appeared to be a man — was killed in the flames while four others were hospitalized, including a first responder who was described as a “fire department EMT.”
Overall, officials said 12 people were displaced by the flames.
Randolph said that the victims that were hospitalized were all listed in stable condition.
Officials did not immediately provide further identifying information on the victims in this incident.
One person, who attempted to use a personal ladder to escape the flames, needed to be rescued by fire crews, officials said.
A neighbor, who identified himself as Zach, told NBC10 that he saw smoke and flames pouring out of the property overnight.
“The flames were like 10 feet high out of the ceiling,” he said.
Another neighbor, Steve Quinones, said he sat and watched the fire crews respond and close roads as they worked to put out the fire.
“I did see a girl who was crying because it was her house, so, that sucked,” he said.
Several angles of the fire were shared on Citizen and showed firefighters battling the flames from Albanus Street, as well as from the westbound side of Roosevelt Boulevard.
Traffic in the area saw delays overnight as crews worked to put out the flames.
Officials did not immediately say what may have started the fire, nor did they detail the extent of the damage caused by the fire.
But, officials said, an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
This is a developing story; check back for more updates.
