An investigation is underway after an inmate died at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center, according to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. Ja’Lan Riddick, 21, was found unresponsive in a housing unit at the jail by a detention officer around 3:15 p.m. Saturday. Riddick received lifesav ing measures but was pronounced dead shortly after. “The death of any individual under our care is a heartfelt matter, and it deeply affects us all,” said Sheriff McFadden. “We have notified Mr. Riddick’s next of kin and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.” A cause of death has not been determined at this time.
