Fairfield expands graduation security following fatal shooting

Solano County is mourning the loss of a teen who was killed during a graduation ceremony Wednesday night in Fairfield.
The shooting also left three other people wounded, including an 11-year-old child, and has prompted changes to security plans for upcoming graduation ceremonies.
Fairfield Hig
h School graduates are scheduled to receive their diplomas Friday evening at Armijo High School, where city officials say there will be an increased police presence.
City and school district officials said it was already the plan to have officers at larger graduation ceremonies. There was no officer present at Wednesday night’s Sem Yeto High School graduation, where the shooting occurred.
Police are still searching for those responsible for the shooting. In response, Fairfield officials are changing policies to ensure officers are present at all graduation ceremonies, including smaller events.
Fairfield Mayor Catherine Moy said she is not sure a police presence would have prevented the shooting because it appeared to occur at close range.
“Our town needs everybody to pray, especially for the families affected by this tremendous loss,” Moy said. “I can’t even imagine. I’ve been crying for the last day, because I can’t bring her baby back.”
Parents and community members also expressed grief over the tragedy.
“I just feel sadness, my heart’s heavy for the community, and for whoever lost someone,” said Felicia Minor, whose child is graduating from Fairfield High School.
The mayor confirmed that the Fairfield Police Department will increase the number of officers at upcoming graduation ceremonies.
A memorial for the graduate who was killed is scheduled for next Friday at Fairfield High School.
