Upstart natural grocery chain Sprouts Farmers Market is expanding its San Antonio-area footprint again — this time in Cibolo. The Phoenix, Arizona-based grocer is moving into the massive Cibolo Crossing shopping center at 17980 IH-35.Sprouts operates almost 500 stores nationwide, but Texas is i ncreasingly one of its strongholds. In recent years, it has been challenging homegrown brands like Central Market and Whole Foods on their own turf, announcing several locations in Central Texas and Dallas-Fort Worth. The grocery chain traces its roots to a simple California farm stand before growing into a chain of farmers’ markets and, later, a brick-and-mortar grocery. Throughout, it has kept its health food focus, delivering a wide assortment of organic produce, bulk foods, and vitamins and supplements at affordable prices. That value proposition, and strong social media marketing, has helped it gain a foothold with customers aged 18 to 34. According to industry publication Supermarket News, the demographic makes up one of Sprout’s fastest-growing customer bases. The new store will be the first in the San Antonio suburb, although it has previously opened three outposts within city limits and another in New Braunfels. The company first entered the Alamo City market with the 2011 acquisition of locally founded grocer Sun Harvest, taking over all three San Antonio stores. Since then, the company has shuttered some locations and opened new grocery stores in emerging neighborhoods.According to Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation records, Sprouts plans to wrap up construction on the 24,439 square foot location by April 2027. Take that with a grain of salt; TDLR timelines are subject to change without notice, and projects are often delayed. Before the Cibolo debut, Sprouts will add a fourth San Antonio store at 13455 Culebra Rd. According to company officials, the store plans to start misting vegetables at the end of 2026. ...read more read less
