A stomach bug appears to be making its way through the Bay Area. According to epidemiologists, it’s a late-season rotavirus. According to wastewaterscan.org, the presence of rotavirus is currently spiking across the country. In the Bay Area, it’s present in wastewater at medium and high level s in San Francisco, Redwood City, Palo Alto, Sunnyvale and San Jose. Parents said it starts with the youngest child, usually an infant, before running through the rest of the household. Dr. Peter Chin-Hong with UCSF said baby changing stations and daycare facilities tend to be high infection areas. “It lives in the gut, and you pass it by the stool and you pass it by touching things without washing hands,” he said. “That’s what preschoolers do all day.” Chin-Hong said there are two safe vaccines available. The other way to avoid infection is to thoroughly wash hands with soap and water for 30 seconds before eating. ...read more read less
