Enforcement begins: Del. drivers speeding in I95 work zone now face fines
May 26, 2026
Delaware drivers who are caught speeding in a work zone on Interstate 95 will be fined, according to the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT).
After a three-week warning period, the Electronic Speed Safety Program (ESSP) camera began issuing violations on May 23 for drivers caught speed
ing on northbound I-95 in the Churchmans Marsh work zone.
On May 2, 2026, DelDOT and Delaware State Police announced the activation of the ESSP camera. However, the first 21 days were a warning period, where no fines were issued.
First-time offenders will receive a base violation of $20 and an additional amount added for each mile per hour over the posted work zone speed limit of 55 mph. For example, if the captured violation occurs at a speed of 66 mph, the speed violation is $20 plus an additional $11, which accounts for $1 for each mile per hour over the 55 mph posted work zone speed limit, and the assessment of other fees as set forth in Delaware Code for a total of $118.
Second and subsequent offenses are higher, officials said. These violations are civil penalties only, and no points will be assessed to driver’s licenses.
According to DelDOT, from May 2 to May 5, over 10,000 vehicles traveled through the work zone at a speed of equal or greater than 11 mph over the posted work zone speed limit. Officials said 39 cars were caught traveling over 100 mph through the posted 55 mph work zone. The highest speed of travel was 139 mph.
The I-95/Churchmans Marsh work zone for the Four Bridges I-95 Rehabilitation Project is expected to be active until mid-2027.
