Beneath Utah’s wide Western skies, summer is a landscape of wildflowers, winding trails, and long golden evenings that shape the way we live. Imagine days that start with a quiet hike, unfold into a scenic drive or lakeside afternoon, and end with a dinner table filled with homegrown flavors and good company. It’s also the season filled with local traditions like rodeos and county fairs, lending energy and culture to mountain life. To truly experience summer at elevation is to find a rhythm: active yet unhurried, social yet restful. It’s less about packing your schedule with everything the season offers and more about choosing the moments to fully engage in. The Peace of a Mountain Trail For Old Town resident Shirley Butler, summer is the chance to enjoy the beautiful backdrop of Utah. “Summer for me is hiking the trails up here in Park City—Sweeney’s Switchbacks, Flat Cable, John’s Trail, and the new urban trail,” she says.  Trails like Sweeney’s Switchbacks and John’s Trail offer a mix of challenge and accessibility, rewarding hikers with sweeping views and quiet moments in nature.  “We’ll take some cheese and a cocktail and go have a little hike and a drink,” she continues. “We have a few places we know, like an old picnic bench or a place where we’ve gathered before.” Scenic Drives, Slow Afternoons, and Staycations Credit: christian horan While hiking trails offer immersion, scenic drives provide perspective. The roads that wind through the Wasatch Back reveal a new vantage point around every curve. A leisurely drive through Guardsman Pass or along Mirror Lake Highway isn’t only about the destination but also the roadside pull-off to add another bird to the life list or a spontaneous picnic at an overlook. Bring a book, pack a blanket, and disconnect. Part of what makes Park City so compelling in the summer is its proximity to other experiences. A drive through neighboring valleys may eventually lead to a county fair or small-town rodeo. Stay the weekend for a change of scenery via a mini getaway.  Whether it’s a night at a boutique hotel or an evening spent exploring a new town, these moments are an opportunity to get to know the locals in the very best ways. Full Plates and Favorite Traditions July is always a month of celebration in Utah with both Independence Day and Pioneer Day (July 24th). This year, July 4th fireworks and drone shows celebrating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence will light up mountain skylines in extraordinary fashion—making it more important to plan your viewing spot in advance. Whether that’s a backyard terrace or a city park, patriotic parties abound. Two weeks later, a distinctly Utah expression of heritage, Pioneer Day or “pie and beer” day to those unaffiliated with the Mormon pioneers, is marked by local gatherings, parades, and an extra day off.  Evenings, Elevated Summer entertaining in the mountains comes with its own set of advantages: gorgeous natural scenery, cooler evenings, and an abundance of fresh, local ingredients. Start with the table. Think layered textures—linen runners, wooden boards, simple ceramics—and let the setting do the heavy lifting. Wildflowers or greenery gathered from a morning walk make for effortless centerpieces. When it comes to food, sourcing locally adds both flavor and a backstory. The Park City Farmers Market is a cornerstone of the season, offering everything from heirloom tomatoes and stone fruits to artisanal cheeses and fresh-baked bread. As a private chef, Butler loves going to the farmer’s market on a weekly basis and getting freshly picked vegetables and fruits and then building a menu around what’s available that week.  Credit: Mosto – stock.adobe.com A grilled protein, a fresh salad, and a few thoughtfully prepared sides are all that’s needed to share a sunset over food, drinks, and conversation with friends. Add a citrus or herb-forward signature cocktail and you’ve created unforgettable memories around an in-the-moment meal. Even when she’s not cooking for a dinner party, she and her husband enjoy takeout at home. “Mark and I treat ourselves every once in a while on a Friday night and bring sushi home. Plate it, make cocktails, and enjoy a bit of local food,” she says. “Ever since COVID, it’s just become one of those things we really love.” A Season to Savor Summer in Park City isn’t about maximizing every moment but instead choosing the ones that matter. It’s the early morning hike that turns into a picnic. The drive that leads to an unexpected adventure. The dinner party that lingers long after the plates are cleared.  The true reward of a summer lived well are the memories.
